Volume, hold and light: the blow-dry is an art that plays out in the preparation as much as in the gesture. Alexandre Zouari's secrets for succeeding at home, just like at the salon.
From the late 1960s, when helmets and rollers still reigned, a young hairdresser imposed another idea of hairstyling on Paris: the blow-dry. That hairdresser was Alexandre Zouari, and the gesture would become his signature. More than half a century later, the technique has not aged a day — precise, patient, attentive to the nature of each head of hair. And the good news is that, with a little method, it can be reproduced at home. Here, step by step, is the art of the beautiful blow-dry.
The right tools, first
A beautiful blow-dry begins with the right tools. No need to multiply them: three are enough. A powerful hairdryer fitted with a concentrator nozzle, which directs the air with precision; one or two round brushes with mixed bristles, whose diameter determines the result — wide to smooth and give soft volume, narrower to mark the curl and work short hair; and a few sectioning clips to organise the work. A soft finishing brush will then lustre the whole.
The choice of diameter is no detail: the wider the brush, the ampler and smoother the movement; the smaller it is, the more marked the curl. It is through the brush that you decide, from the very start, on the final allure.
Everything is decided before drying
The most common mistake is to attack the blow-dry on soaking hair. Yet a beautiful blow-dry begins on towel-dried hair — without rubbing — then pre-dried by hand to about 80%, roots up, without a brush. Working hair that is too wet is exhausting for nothing and damages the fibre.
Before drying, apply to damp hair a hazelnut-sized amount of heat-protecting care, spread from lengths to roots. It is the assurance of a fibre protected from heat and of a lasting shine. On fine hair, add a volumising mousse at the root; on thick or unruly hair, a smoothing cream on the lengths.
« Volume is born at the root. Lift, direct the air upward, and the whole hairstyle comes alive. »
The gesture, section by section
The key to a clean blow-dry lies in organisation. Divide the hair into horizontal sections: clip the top up and always start at the nape, working section by section upward. Working strand by strand, without rushing, makes all the difference between an approximate drying and a true blow-dry.
On each strand, place the round brush under the root, apply light tension and follow the hot airflow — always directed from root to tip, never the reverse, to smooth the hair's cuticles and catch the light. Wind the tip onto the brush at the end of the stroke to draw the movement.
The professionals' secret comes next: each finished strand is set with a blast of cool air. It is this, not the heat, that fixes the shape and reveals the shine. Most hairdryers have a dedicated button — it is your best ally.
Adapting the gesture to your hair type
There is not one blow-dry, but as many blow-dries as there are heads of hair. Fine hair calls for volume: dry it upside down and work the root with a wide brush, without weighing the lengths down with product. Thick or curly hair demands mastery: separate into finer sections, take your time, and rely on the tension of the brush to discipline the matter. Coloured or fragile hair, finally, requires moderate heat and systematic protective care.
The mistakes to avoid
A few faults are enough to ruin a blow-dry. Knowing them is already to style better:
- Starting on hair that is too wet: you exhaust yourself and the hold is nil.
- Directing the air from tip to root: it ruffles the cuticles and dulls the hair.
- Overloading with product: light comes from the health of the hair, not the amount of care.
- Forgetting the blast of cool air — without it, the shape does not hold.
- Touching your hair while it is still warm — the fatal mistake.
Making the result last
The final secret comes down to patience. Once the blow-dry is finished, do not touch your hair while it is warm: let it cool for a few minutes, wound up or simply pinned in a loose bun, so the shape can set. Then open it up with your fingers rather than the brush, to preserve the movement. A veil of soft hairspray, misted from a distance, seals the whole without stiffening it.
Held this way, a beautiful blow-dry lasts the day — and often the next. For true luxury, in hairstyling as elsewhere, is the time given to the right gesture.
